WOODEN SPOON
(Lesley Duncan)

I was born with a wooden spoon in my mouth,
Lived in need, there was always money owing,
Daddy gone, said he wanted to be free,
Gave his seed but he never saw it growing
It was me. And my brother was three.

I was schooled, but I only learned to be
Truant child and I split when I was fourteen,
Over ruled, it was really crushing me,
Running wild was the only way
To keep my sanity

When you get a little bit older
you'll understand, Mama,
When you get a little bit older you'll see.

I was weird growing up before I was three,
Left alone with a latchkey in my pocket,
How I feared all the anger building in me,
Now its flown and it's hit me like a rocket-
Now l see that its made me free.

When you get a little bit older
you'll understand, Mama,
When you get a little bit older you'll see

Now I'm fine and I fought my way
Right through,
All the pain - and it gave me
Strength to say it,
Now its time and you're gonna make it too,
It's a game and I know enough to play it,
It's a game.
